China has started intensive testing phase for its giant radio telescope, which measures 500m (1,640ft) across, in search for alien life. The colossal dish is said to have received its first signals from space. Chinese scientists expect to calibrate the instrument to make it fully operational in the next three years. The $180-million military-run facility should help China become a science powerhouse.
“For many years, we have had to go outside of China to make observations – and now we have the largest telescope. People can’t wait to use it.”
